SECTION 3: Supplemental (Non-Vacancy Specific) Recruitment Activities Undertaken

Time Period Covered: December 1, 2011 to, and including, November 21, 2012

Stations in Employment Unit: WELY-FM, WELY-AM

1.      December 11, 12, 13, 2011 - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,– 10 am – Happy Days Preschoolers came through the station to learn about how a radio station works and about the people who work here.  The children and their adult leaders received a tour and had the opportunity to record their voices.

2.      January 10, 2012 – Tuesday - 3 pm – Ely Tiger Scouts came to WELY for a tour of the radio station.  Program Director Brett Ross gave the boys a tour of the facility, spoke about the mission of WELY, radio broadcasting, and gave the scouts an opportunity to record an audio track and to talk live on the radio.

3.      January 19, 2012 - Thursday - Participated in the Bois Forte Band State of the Band Job Fair on January 19, 2012.  Made available information regarding job and internship possibilities at WELY, End of the Road Radio.  The WELY Booth was manned by General Manager, Joany Haag and Traffic Director, Amy Paetznick.

4.      December 1, 2011 – February 4, 2012 – Two high school students hosted and produced their own 2 hour weekly Top Forty Show on Friday Nights.  They worked as interns and learned about broadcasting and live radio programming.

5.      August and September, 2012 - a college student interned at WELY in our music department.  This student learned to review, choose and catalog music for broadcasting.  He worked approximately 32 hours.

6.      September, October, and November, 2012 – Allowed a young man who wanted to learn to do voice work to come into the station, use a computer for word processing, and use the production studio for some voice work – radio ads, liners, and short oratorical pieces that he wrote himself.  Our staff continues to work with him as he learns these skills.  He was at the radio station approximately 3 hours a week.

7.       Worked with two elementary students from Washington Elementary School in

Ely on “studio recording” of the school lunch menus. These students come into the radio station each month to record school lunch menus. Both students are very engaged in their role at WELY and are on the air twice a day during the school year.

8.      Continued to actively work with the General Manager of the new Nett Lake low power non-commercial educational station on the Nett Lake Reservation to help them get started and to get ready to recruit and train radio station employees. This is an activity we have been engaged in for all of 2012.
